Rev. Dr. Samuel Woodrow Williams  1954-1970

Assistant Minister, Dr Samuel Williams, Philosopher, teacher, preacher, and social activist, became Friendship's fourth pastor, serving during critical period of desegregation in Atlanta and the U.S. (1954-1970).  He was stout and articulate leading voice for national civil rights and social change in Georgia's schools, publish facilities and transportation accommodations.  As a founder of SCLC ( Southern Christian Leadership Conference), President of the Atlanta NAACP, and chairman of the Atlanta Human Relations Commission, "Dr. Sam" attacked the institutions of segregation and discrimination, with unusual vigor.  Friendship Center (now Samuel W. Williams Apartments) was the beginning of Friendship's greatest contribution to the community.  These garden apartments were constructed under Rev. Williams, who also led the acquisition of property adjacent to the church and a renovation of the present structure in 1968.
