Rev. Dr. Edward Randolph Carter  1882-1884

The Second pastor was Rev. Dr. Edward Randolph Carter who had worked with Rev. Quarles for some time and who led the congregation for 62 years.  Rev. Carter served the church during the aftermath of Reconstruction, a period which saw blacks disenfranchised, lynched in large numbers, segregated, and generally relegated to second class citizenship.  In 1895, Rev. Carter applied and received the official charter of the church.  Active in the formative years of the World Baptist Alliance, he was well traveled and also a successful administrator who increased the membership at one time to some 2000.  He also directed the construction of a home for the aged. It was under Rev. Carter that many of the boards and auxiliaries of today were begun as well.
